Had originally pre-booked our 9:19am train ride with reserved seats to Hakodate but apparently heavy snow fall somewhere along the rail line had caused a cancellation of this particular 9:19am train. We only realised this upon arrival at the Sapporo JR station at 9am when seeing many people looking at train time on the display panel. The next train to Hakodate was not due for departure till 10:30am or so but even then this train was delayed, so you can imagine how crowded this train will be when it finally arrived nearly close to 11am. We were anxiously waiting for the train and were not in the mood to take pictures so you will notice there isn't any picture for this morning part of the trip, only started taking pictures much later during the last part of the train ride. When the train eventually arrived, it was already pretty crowded and luckily we were not carrying any big luggage (just a small backpack) for a day trip, else don't know how to make our way up the train. There were only (crowded) standing space and since this is not our pre-booked train number, of course we were not having any reserved seat and had to stand all the way for nearly a quarter of the journey (1 hour) till we reached Noboribetsu when more people had alighted.
Reached Hakodate station at 14:26pm which is a little faster than the usual 4 hours expected for this journey.
A first step onto the white fluffy snow on Hakodate
A birds' eye view of the Hakodate Station area from the 12th Floor of a department store building.
The popular "Only in Hakodate" Lucky Pierrot Burger shop near Hakodate station. A little challenge looking for this shop even with a basic map taken the shop website. Its on a side street.
Sorry people.....too hungry to snap a picture of the complete burger so you just have to make do with a burger with a big bite off it..... I think the burger tastes fine but not "divine" that i will be craving for it.
Took the tram number 5 from the Hakodate train station to this Jujigai station (only few stops away, maybe 5-10mins). From here, need to walk all the way up the hilly road to the Hakodate Gondola station. It probably took us 10-15 mins to walk up to the gondola station.
The big gondola took only maybe 5 mins to climb up to the hill top station
This is the famous Hakodate view during daylight.
This is the famous Hakodate view during the evening time (not dark enough yet)
Could not wait further (later) to capture a night picture as we need to get down the hill by 6pm to rush to the train station to catch our return train at 6:24pm back to Sapporo. In fact on the way down the hill at about 6pm, the place is already very dark but there aren't that many lights from houses or street to make it looks like a postcard night view of Hakodate. Reached Sapporo as expected by about 10pm.
