Day 1 - Arrival in Sapporo 01 Feb 2012

After touching down at Sapporo Chitose Airport at about 9+am, managed to get to the JR Train ticketing counter by about 9:35am
At this ticketing counter, there is a special desk for foreigner who don't speak Japanese. There is a staff who can speak some English to assist travelers with all ticket booking. We booked our JR 5 Days pass with all the required seat reservation for all 5 days right here so it took a while to complete the whole process. All seats that can be reserved were reserved in advance to make it easier. This include our reserved seats on the popular SL Fuyo-no-Shitsugen Train (a winter only special steam train). More about this when i am blogging on this ride later.

By the same time we had our train tickets sorted out, it was about 10:45am. Took the 10:49am train into Sapporo city centre.

From here, it was a short few minutes walk to the first hotel we were staying in Hokkaido; Best Western Fino Sapporo.

Since it was too early for check-in (Note: Japanese hotel generally only allow check-in strictly at 3pm), so we left for an Otaru day trip right after leaving our luggage at the hotel reception. Walked back to Sapporo JR Station to take the train to Minami Otaru Station. Its a short ride of about 30 minutes.

Started walking from Minami Otaru Station towards the Otaru Canal, passing by various prominent building or shops.

After a short 10 mins, saw the LeTao pastries shop just across the junction.

Looking out from the LeTao cafe on the second floor, with Mt Tenguyama in the background.

Reaching the canal soon but the one below is definitely not the "canal"

The real canal is just next to the warehouse building across the junction.

Walking straight from here after crossing the junction will bring us to the Otaru Train Station.

The following is the venue for the annual light up event in Otaru which i will be covering at a later part of the trip.

The building on the right is the Dormy Inn Premium Otaru

Cross the road and we will be at the train station soon. The blue roof building is the bus station.

This is the Twin Bed Room in the Best Western Fino Sapporo Hotel

We went for a Crab Buffet meal at Nanda near Susukino subway station

Free Flow soft drinks, coffee and teas

Interesting Cone Ice Cream making machine
